I ♥ the 80s!

Remember Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure? The Labyrinth? The Wizard? I'm not a child of the 80s, but most of my post-collegiate, pre-professional 20-something readers are, so here's a special treat for you guys. Your favorite 80s movies. Bring on the memories!

my undergrad friends used to say that the only demonstrable reason for my complete lack of 80's cultural knowledge was that I was brought up in a sealed cave at the bottom of the Ocean. This conveniently explains why i saw Ferris Bueller my sophomore year in 1999, Better off Dead in 2000 and the Breakfast Club during the summer of 2001. If anything I would classify myself as child of the early 90's, the bastard child of the princess from Legend of Zelda and Mr Cobain.

Animated/Fantasy features were an entirely different matter. If I had to rank my favorite 80's films which i actually saw in the decade their burst forth from their celluloid womb it would look a little something like this:

1. Princess Bride (1987)
2. Animal Olympics (1980)
3. The Neverending Story (1984)
4. the Chipmunk Adventure (1987)
5a. The Last Unicorn (1982)
5b. Transformers: the Movie (1986)
7. B & T's Excellent Adv. (1989)
8. Ghostbusters (1984)
9. The Wizard (1989)

expecting a 10? no.

batteries not included: don't remember much, except maybe that something didn't have batteries and the entire plot centered around this. do remember there was an exlamation of damn! somewhere in the middle of it and inevitably- out of nowhere- the closest adult's hands would clamp onto my ears. i was five and didn't know what this meant, but it added a whole illicitly thrilling element, which is probably why i always recommended we watch it. also, the gods must be crazy. you can't go wrong with bushmen and bitchy women in the wilderness.

Sixteen Candles isn't on here yet? For shame, my friends. Damn near as quotable as The Princess Bride. Also need to second Goonies. And that's about it because no one in the states has seen Momo or The Black Cauldron but me.
